RIP Jay Reatard

apparently the rumors are true, Jay Reatard is dead. what the fuck? 2010 is starting off just as bad as 2009. sad sad sad.

i thought Jay was awesome for his mix of Buzzcocks style pop-punk and The Clean style kiwi pop. he will be missed.

here's hom doing a rocking cover of the Go Betweens song "Don't Let Him Come Back".

Radio Birdman "New Race" 1977

listening to Radio Birdman reminds of this time i was playing a show in Cincinnati and this kid in the crowd was really pissed off at us because my band were wearing arm bands and he kept saying we were ripping off Radio Birdman (who obviously invented the concept of armbands) and i refused to respond to him. then later in the show i had my back turned to the crowd and someone ran up on stage and dropped a trashcan over my head, knocking me to the ground. i threw the trash can off of me and turned around to see who did it and i made eye contact with the Radio Birdman kid and so i jumped off the stage and grabbed a plastic folding chair and hit him across the back with it. then i got back on stage and finished our set. after the show was over i found out that he wasn’t even the one who had dumped the trash can on me and instead that it had been a member of the opening band, who was pissed off that noone had bothered to watch them play. so i felt like an asshole and went and apologized to the Radio Birdman kid, but he told me he was super stoked about me smashing him with a chair and told me that had turned him into a fan of us instantly. so i gave him a free t-shirt and bought him a beer. the lesson of this story is that you should hit people with chairs if they don’t like you and then afterwards you will be friends.

I Heart Me Some Random 60s Japanese Garage Pop

this band is called The Golden Cups. they sound kinda like a Japanese version of the Zombies. really great pop song.

Coogan Rulz

Steve Coogan's performance as Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People is one of my favorite comedic acting performances in any movie ever. it's a damn shame the Oscars never recognize understated work like this and instead just wanna give Sean Penn Oscars for yelling and crying and spitting (more of a knock on him in Mystic River...he was actually damn good in Milk)

goodbye Rowland

i know i'm late posting this, but i had been away from my computer the last week and didn't really have a chance to write about the passing of a post-punk legend, Rowland S. Howard. former member of the the greatest band of all time, The Birthday Party as well as a member of These Immoral Souls, The Boys Next Door, and Crime and the City Solution. he worked with Lydia Lunch, Nikki Sudden, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and many many others. he's one of the most influential guitar players of all time and he will be truly missed.

here's Rowland playing a version of the Boys Next Door song he wrote "Shivers"

and this is a clip of him playing his song "She Cried" (my personal favorite).

and finally a clip of the Birthday Party ripping through "junkyard".

everyone's seen this clip, but who cares it rules. Tracy's shirt is a thing of amazement...topped only by his crotch thrusting. Rowland beating on his guitar like a percussion instrument while smoking a cig and looking like he could give a fuck is also un-fucking touchable.
